Art,
Myths, and Rituals by Kyra Belán, focuses
on the re-emergence of myths, archetypes, and symbols
in the arts of today's society. Belán explains
how changes in the mythologies of the world are due to
the shift from peaceful matriarchal societies to patriarchal
warrior systems. The strong contemporary attraction to
the matriarchal cultures of the past is largely due to
the qualities of those societies: peaceful, eco-conscious,
and gender-balanced.
An adept and prolific artist, Belán is proficient
in traditional art forms, such as drawing and painting.
These media appear in Art, Myths, and Rituals.
Accompanying them, however, are postmodern media, such
as earthworks, site-specific art, performance art, and
digital and electronic artworks. All the images pictured
and examined are Belán's own work.
This
book is lavishly illustrated, both in color and black-and-white.
